The International Taekwon-do Federation (ITF) has announced a return to simultaneous pattern performances at its World Championships and World Cups, allowing competitors to perform their routines side by side rather than one after another. This decision follows a thorough review of recent events and feedback from athletes, officials, and member associations.
According to the ITF’s official statement, the change aims to “safeguard fairness, consistency, and the best possible competitive environment for athletes, officials, and organizers.”
Initially, the trials of the sequential format received positive feedback, particularly from referees, but over time, concerns arose regarding competitive fairness and the dynamics of the events. The federation consulted its Coaches’ and Athletes’ Committees, national associations, and continental representatives before deciding to revert to the traditional format, in accordance with the Tournament Rules, which permit both formats.
ITF President Grand Master Paul Weiler has emphasized in recent interviews the importance of balancing the sport’s growth with institutional self-criticism. This announcement comes after a year of intense activity, including the 2025 World Championships in Poreč, Croatia, which attracted more than 1,400 athletes from 57 countries, highlighting the global scale and diversity of ITF Taekwondo.
The measure provides predictability for athletes and coaches regarding future events, such as the 2026 ITF World Cup, scheduled for September 28 through October 4 in Benidorm, Spain, where delegations from every continent are expected to attend.
