Germany prepares for a historic year in European taekwondo in 2026

Munich and Nuremberg will host key events including the European Senior Championships and celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the European Taekwondo Union.

Germany will become the epicenter of continental taekwondo in 2026, hosting two major events: the European Senior Taekwondo Championships and the WT President's Cup, the latter part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the European Taekwondo Union (ETU).

The European Senior Championships will be held from May 12 to 14, 2026, at the modern BMW Park in Munich. This biennial tournament brings together Europe's best athletes, national teams, and officials to compete for the most prestigious continental titles. The event marks the return of the championship to Munich after 48 years—the last edition there was in 1978—and will be the fourth time that Germany has hosted it, following editions in Stuttgart (1984) and Bonn (2006). Historically, Germany ranks in the top three in the overall medal count at these championships.

Subsequently, Nuremberg will host the WT President's Cup from June 4 to 7, 2026, at the KIA Metropol Arena. This event has been adjusted to the international calendar to coincide with the European Championships. On June 6, as part of this competition, a special event will be held to mark the 50th anniversary of the ETU, founded in 1976. ETU Secretary General Antonio Barbarino has announced that there will be "big surprises" during the ceremony.

The organization of these events is the result of collaboration between ETU President Sakis Pragalos, German Taekwondo Union President and ETU Vice President Markus Kohlhofer, and World Taekwondo Secretary General Jeongkang Seo. Both tournaments will be broadcast on television, allowing for a global audience.

With first-class facilities and solid organizational experience, Germany is positioning itself as the heart of European taekwondo celebrations in 2026, bringing together athletes, officials, and the entire taekwondo family.

A truly special year awaits taekwondo on the continent.
